ABSTRACT

Djallonke sheep are woolless; their coat consists of short, stiff hair. Some intensive feeding trials were undertaken to investigate the growth possibilities of the Djallonke male lambs. Ivory Coast has an estimated 720,000 head of sheep. Two different types of hair sheep are found all along the African Coast from Senegal to Angola: a taller type usually found in the drier countries of the north, and a smaller type, better adapted to the humid tropical climate, known as the Djallonke breed and also called Guinea Sheep or West African Dwarf. The Djallonke sheep appear to be well adapted to a humid tropical environment, as indicated by their high fertility. With the support of development organizations, however, some villages are starting to follow a few management rules: they put all the sheep of a village together with a shepherd, gather them at night in a park, and regulate breeding seasons.
