ABSTRACT

The superiority of US cattle has been widely recognized by other countries as evidenced by the major trade in exporting semen and livestock all over the world from the US Dairying perhaps does better than other segments of agriculture in this regard, but the nature of dairying requires daily disposal of most of our product to avoid major disruptions. The meat industry has similar problems, as does fresh produce, but most grains can be stored at reasonable costs without major deterioration until needed or until markets improved. In the field of breeding and genetics, a continuation of the application of basic animal-breeding principles to the practical field of dairy cattle breeding and genetic improvement. In the year 2000, the dairy enterprise will be a very sophisticated unit with input-output ratios closely monitored in terms of energy and resources used and food produced. There is growing international dependency within the dairy industry involving utilization of genetic material.
