ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book identifies many of the socioeconomic dimensions of nuclear waste management, the socioeconomic impacts, and the mitigation, community development, and citizen participation strategies related to repository siting. It attempts to draw conclusions concerning future issues, policy, and research needs in nuclear waste management and repository siting. The book examines research needs and issues and policy dimensions of the nuclear waste problem as they bear on concerns at the Federal, state, and local levels, and as they relate to the major periods of repository development siting, construction, operation, closure, and long-term monitoring. It explores the wide range of socioeconomic impacts that might occur as a result of repository development and to briefly overview the methods that may be applied to assess such impacts for repository siting areas.
