ABSTRACT

The nature of scholarship in the humanities plus the economics of research in the specific disciplines of the field—largely conducted with little or no financial assistance—have contributed to the relatively small number of databases available to assist scholars. When compared to scientific and technical disciplines, the humanities have had little money with which to develop and use computerized information resources. While scientific research tends to be additive or evolutionary, humanities research tends to be holistic or cumulative. In science, problems are solved and their solutions quickly become the commonplace building blocks of future inquiries. A continuation of the well-known Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, this file contains the indexing records prepared by the staff of the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library of Columbia University. Over 350 art and architecture periodicals are scanned for materials to go into the database.
