ABSTRACT

Wilderness management has been one of those toward which wilderness managers have seen a great deal of increased staffing and dollars diverted and assigned. The assumption of a wilderness ethic seems to be gaining a great deal of momentum. Moving along the continuum to leasing wilderness areas to the private sector for management is certainly provocative and deserves considerable discussion. The notion of management of the wilderness versus management of use deserves attention too. The chapter examines the reintroduction of fire, the management of vegetative mosaics, concern and management of certain wildlife species. The notion of wilderness advocacy groups keeping wilderness matters in the forefront in order to keep the heat on the agencies is strategically sound, but wilderness managers all know that they are faced with a multitude of programs and program priorities. Keeping the wilderness management wheel squeaking will certainly strengthen agency support.
