ABSTRACT

Mack Prichard's wilderness experience began in 1966, when the federal government conducted a hearing on the future of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The hearing was followed by a hike led by Harvey Broome, one of the founders of the Wilderness Society. These wilderness management problems, whether they be East or West, perennially arise. In 1973 there were only 14 eastern wilderness areas. some states in the East have developed their own systems of natural areas, sometimes large and sometimes "mini-wildernesses." A two-fold national problem revolves around how to preserve the wilderness in the country and how to clean up the jungle in the cities. More than 2,300 years ago, India had a system of parks and wilderness areas. More than 2,300 years ago, India had a system of parks and wilderness areas under an enlightened ruler. They are all gone, except for one preserve for the black rhino.
