ABSTRACT

The frequent user of wilderness may be more professional than the remote manager, and the author who is fortunate enough to combine occupation/avocation/vacation may fall into several categories. The general public have the most to gain; and they have the most to lose from our management; and they have several ways to participate in wilderness management: passive support; active user; volunteer worker/user/manager. Without citizens, there is no need for wilderness; and without citizen interest, wilderness will not continue; and without citizen interest and participation, wilderness would be of little value! The citizen participation also represents a major threat to wilderness itself because of the impacts it places on the wilderness resource. Citizens provide both the need and the opportunity, and also pose the problems and hold the key to the solutions!.
