ABSTRACT

The nation's buoyant economy is supporting major expansion of new infrastructure and rapid industrial growth. Government planners are facing difficult problems of accelerating urbanization, serious poverty, and the "growing pains" which inevitably accompany rapid expansion. Nigeria has embarked on construction of a new Federal Capital City (FCC). The most important single factor in determining the physical organization of the FCC is transportation structure. Industrial development is concentrated in estates located at elevations lower than the residential and commercial areas. As one of the most basic of human needs and the most direct point of contact between the FCC and its residents, housing is a major concern in the FCC. As the center of the nation, the FCC will include a number of unique cultural, recreational, and governmental facilities, many of monumental significance. A close partnership of public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy will be required in the FCC's development.
