ABSTRACT

Most Latin American peasant farmers rely on wildlife for part of their protein needs. The tablon farmer buys wood by the carga from wood cutters who bring wood to town on a daily basis, going from door to door to sell it. Wood cutters may travel 10-20 km on foot in the course of their daily work, but usually earn less than Q1.00 for their effort. Farmers rarely spend the night in the tablones for the expressed purpose of discouraging pests. Because they spend much of their day in the tablones, and most tablones are close to human habitations, troublesome animals are discouraged from frequenting tablón areas. Firewood is constantly collected from the hill slopes and from the river bank. During the rainy season, much of the firewood is brought down from the mountains by the river.
