ABSTRACT

Tabulation of their major fields at Bryn Mawr shows that proportionately high percentages of alumnae in sciences-biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology-went on to earn the Ph.D. The mean interval between Bryn Mawr A. B. and the Ph.D. degree elsewhere was 9.4 years. About 39% of the holders of the Ph.D. degree reported they had at some time done paid part-time work for a mean duration of 5.5 years. Nearly 20% of the holders of the Ph.D. elsewhere were working part-time in 1970–1971, over two thirds of them in college or university teaching or administration. Although more than 20% of the married holders of the Ph.D. were in classes 1961–1965, at the time of the Survey they accounted for fewer than 8% of the children. The oldest median age at marriage was reported by seven Ph.D.’s from classes 1916–1920: 34.1 years. In classes 1940–1960 over 15% of the respondents married under the age of 21 and received Ph.D.’s thereafter.
