ABSTRACT

Inherent in a personalized approach to the subject of Open Admissions, which this book endeavors to present, is an examination of the expectations of those individuals most closely affected by it. During the course of preparing this handbook, the authors conducted numerous personal interviews with students and with faculty members. No attempt was made to structure a scientific basis for the survey; what we wanted was an informal compilation of the participants’ hopes, fears, and expectations about their involvement in the CUNY experiment. Because Hunter does not label Open Admissions students as such, our criterion for isolating these students was their enrollment in remedial courses.
