ABSTRACT

The married life of Madeleine-Salome Oberlin extended over fourteen and a half years, a total of 174 months. In addition to her maternal and household labors, Mme Oberlin made invaluable contributions to her husband's work in her private capacity as wife, helpmeet, and counselor. Despite her many separations from the Ban de la Roche, her frailty, and all the fatigues of motherhood and of managing a large household, Mme Oberlin helped with the pastoral work of her husband, sharing with him not only the training of teachers, but also the conducting of many devotional and educational meetings. The fact is that Louise was literally Oberlin's collaborator; she carried on all of the functions that Mme Oberlin had performed except that she was neither his consort nor the biological mother of his children.
