ABSTRACT

The Freshman Seminar instructor does both teaching and counseling. If the staff is faculty only, the training will probably focus on loosening up the teacher to deal with students as individuals to allow for greater class participation, and on helping him take an occasional backseat in class discussion. In addition to encouraging the sharing of experience in staff sessions, the coordinator can make written materials available in an easily accessible materials center. In staff sessions, the instructor can play the role of presenting the college policies he disagrees with and can thus take the edge off his discomfort with a particular policy. A staff composed of "old hands" at the college will not require much information about college rules and resources. A bulletin board for Seminar staff materials and notices can also reinforce communications among staff members. Instructors' involvement in students' personal problems can become an issue in staff meetings.
