ABSTRACT

The cooperative approach to planning the semester's syllabus elicits the participation of Seminar students from the first session of Seminar. Skills topics are usually scheduled early on in the semester, with a scattering of informational topics through the semester. When course requirements are about to be presented in Seminar, it is wise to precede the presentation with a session that aims to clarify the reasons underlying course requirements. The Seminar group can be taken step-by-step through a decision-making process that results in students' being registered and scheduled for their next semester's classes. The sequence of Seminar sessions takes a large chunk of Seminar time. But, coming toward the end of the semester, the sessions allow for a recapitulation of much of what Seminar has covered earlier in the semester: gathering information, assessing peer opinions, using information about requirements, considering one's own needs as a student, and acting upon those needs in a purposive way.
