ABSTRACT

The development problems facing Southern Africa are unique, complex, and rapidly evolving. The problems of the former Trust Territories Botswana, Swaziland, and Lesotho - may be somewhat different than the problems of transition for communities that have been fully colonial in their status - Rhodesia, Nambibia, Mozambique, and the Republic of South Africa. The kingdom of Lesotho has always been independent, but it was a British Trust Territory from 1875 to 1966. One of the problems facing Southern African nations is the development of new goals for economic growth and employment, income distribution, and political processes. The Lesotho National Nutrition Conference was held at the Roma campus of The National University of Lesotho and was attended by representatives of the several government ministries and agencies concerned with food and nutrition. As in the case of the Lesotho food study, base levels of adequacy can be established and tested by objective criteria.
