ABSTRACT
A plant indigenous to western North America, the Buffalo gourd, has evolved characters that give this plant potential as an arid lands crop. It is capable of producing acceptable yields of vegetable oil, protein, and starch. The excessive vine growth may also have a potential as forage. An intensive research project supported by disciplines of genetics and plant breeding, biochemistry, and nutrition and toxicology are engaged in a study of domesticating this species.
