ABSTRACT

The studies involved in the Consortium effort encompass a broad range of early childhood intervention approaches. Edward Zigler investigated the effects of regular Head Start and Follow Through interventions on two cohorts of preschool children in New Haven, Connecticut. Cynthia and Martin Deutsch also examined the effects of one specific intervention program on four sample waves of children from low-income areas in New York City. The Early Training Project conducted by Dr. Susan Gray utilized a single intervention model, but implemented it through two delivery systems, a center-based summer program and a home visitor winter program. David Weikart's Perry Preschool Project, begun xn 1962, provided 58 academically high-risk children with a cognitively-oriented preschool program for two years before the children entered kindergarten. Five cohorts of children were studied over a period of thirteen years. Results showed that preschool attendance had an immediate and positive impact on the measured cognitive-linguistic development of the children in the experimental group
