ABSTRACT

I have before me the issue of your newspaper dated 28 February 1968 and a letter from Alexander Ginzburg's mother protesting against the libellous (as she describes it) article in the same newspaper of 18 January 1968. Yet again there is the contrast between the 'snivelling prevarications' (as Marx put it) of the censored press and the uncensored voice of samizdat. The point is - whom are we to believe? It is difficult to. make a direct check - who is going to permit access to the records of the court hearing of the Ginzburg-Galanskov case? The only thing left is an indirect verification. I shall try to explain to you why I give no credence to the official version in this particular case.
