ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors highlight the latter type of exports embodying advanced technology. They concentrate on those which at one stage or another were subject to the Western strategic embargo. Since 1960 there has been a remarkable expansion of East–West trade. The expansion of East–West trade has been largely due to the initiative of the Socialist countries. There are also several multinational trading corporations specializing in East–West trade, such as Eastern Industrial, Eurin-trade, and Satra. The range of items exported by multinational corporations to the Socialist countries covers practically the whole spectrum of manufactures entering world trade. Although the Socialist countries are large importers of embodied advanced technology from the West, some of them have achieved high technological levels in a number of fields. These countries have become exporters of sophisticated items not only to less-developed areas but also to the industrialized West.
