ABSTRACT

The physical and human phases of the geography of Arizona are diverse, and few generalizations can be drawn about the state as a whole. Arizona can be divided into three major physical regions: the Plateau, the Basin and Range, and the transition zone-the Mountain District. The history of peoples in Arizona is also a story of variety. The Indians have lived in Arizona for a very long time, but they have made little impact on the environment. Arizona's population is rapidly growing, and in terms of percentage it ranks either first or second in the nation. The economy of Arizona is strong, but that was not always the case. Arizona traditionally has had a boom to bust history, and that process has occurred repeatedly in the agricultural, mining, and ranching sectors of the economy. Arizona faces many problems in the future, and one of the greatest of these is water.
