ABSTRACT

Coconuts, cocoa, and bananas were being grown on the farm when the Methodist Conference into the Samoa Methodist Land Development scheme (SMLD) was formed. The SMLD sells both the cocoa and the copra in sacks to the government. Passionfruit, another crop grown at the SMLD farm, has been only recently introduced. Two and one-fourth acres are now being cultivated. Snacks are bought by farm-workers on a weekly system of debiting purchases against wages, and some items are purchased from the milk room on the SMLD. One of the stated aims of the SMLD is agricultural and community upgrading. The SMLD also is furnishing agricultural training. This program already is providing food for the school, which has many boarding students. The SMLD is seen as the place for experimentation with products and appropriate technology systems and equipment.
