ABSTRACT

A low-cost version of a generator of biogas was developed and demonstrated in April 1978 by the Arusha Appropriate Technology Project (AATP) of Tanzania’s Small Industry Development Organization. The aim of AATP is to assist villagers in developing self-reliant, self-development technical skills to meet their expressed needs. The prototype fabricated from flattened oil drums is in the yard of AATP, near the entrance and in full view of anyone passing near or entering the compound. The gas can be used to fuel a commercial range or hot plate or a very simple AATP-developed cooker that can be placed in the traditional wood or charcoal brazier. A prototype of the seven-drum system is on display and is being demonstrated at AATP. AATP has a small but comprehensive reference collection and regularly receives publications from some two dozen organizations around the world doing work related to appropriate technology.
