ABSTRACT

China's development of its energy resources has been quite impressive. It is the world's third largest producer of raw coal. One area of coal technology where the Chinese need to make substantial progress is coal preparation. Quantitative comparisons of Chinese energy technology with advanced world standards reveal serious gaps and deficiencies in practically every exploration, extraction, transportation, and conversion activity. The chapter provides comprehensive review of China's energy technologies attempts to present a large variety of specific information in international perspective to convey an appreciation of both the existing technological lag and the magnitude of the future tasks facing the Chinese. Hydrocarbon production has been the most successful extractive branch of China's energy development. The Chinese are producing an inadequate amount of electricity in relation to their total energy needs and, according to official admissions; power generation is "a weak link" in the national economy.
