ABSTRACT
Hellmut Becker, director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung, spoke of the pluralism of values in contemporary society. What set of values is necessary, and how is it to be derived? To Professor Becker, the answers to these questions require the development of a "moral intelligence" that combines the religiously transcendental with technology's capacity for controlling nature.
