ABSTRACT

Soil profile processes are of concern to society, since they act to determine the nature of the soil resources upon which society depends. The study of soil profile processes is thus a two-way one, involving both the influence of soils on man's activities and, in turn, the influence of man on soils. The primary soil profile processes involved have been decalcification and the destruction of the original sedimentary structures. Having established some idea of the lability of different major soil components, it will be appropriate to study present-day soil profile processes in relation to man's activities. It has been stressed that man's activities may affect the quality and flexibility of soil resources and that man should use his knowledge of soil profile processes in order to manipulate the soil resource to the maximum benefit of society and also for the maximum conservation of the resource.
