ABSTRACT

Homoeopathy is a holistic form of pharmacological therapeutics developed in the early 1800s by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. In 1903 the American Medical Association did revise its code of ethics to permit homoeopaths to become members. The last ten years have seen a true resurgence of homoeopathy in the United States, due primarily to the public’s dissatisfaction with conventional medicine and its desire for an alternative. The key to Samuel Hahnemann’s discovery of the homoeopathic system was provided by the principle of “similars"-in other words, that “likes are cured by likes.” A point of considerable interest to persons desiring to introduce holistic ways of thinking into medicine is the homoeopathic emphasis on the “strange and peculiar symptom.” Since preventive medicine and health enhancement are important aspects of holistic health practices, the value of homoeopathy in the areas is worth noting. Homoeopathic techniques can also be combined with other methods of health enhancement as regulation of diet, exercise, and yoga.
