ABSTRACT

Four major regions are found in Cameroon: the Chad basin, or northern plains; the plateaus of the central and southern parts of the country; the western highlands; and the coastal lowlands. The country's location close to the equator suggests to most Europeans and Americans a hot, very damp climate—and this is the case in some areas of Cameroon. The differences in rainfall amounts and temperature influence in turn the vegetation zones of the country. There are two major vegetation zones, the equatorial forests and the tropical grasslands or savannas. The Cameroon population lives mainly in rural areas. The expansion in educational facilities and the increase in the proportion of school-age children in school continued and accelerated after independence. One aspect of the public health system in Cameroon that has been receiving special attention is its emphasis on treatmentof illness rather than prevention of illness.
