ABSTRACT

The names of the men to be studied were obtained from Directories published close to 1960 or immediately after that year. The education administrators were identified through the Directory of American College Presidents and Deans, 1962-63. The highest percentage of both groups grew up in the North Central section of the United States: 42 percent of social scientists and 36 percent of educators. A few more educators grew up in the Northeast: 26 percent of educators and 16 percent of social scientists. Educators retired formally somewhat earlier than social scientists: 47 percent of the educators compared with 32 percent of the social scientists had retired by age 66. Part-time work might seem to be more accessible to college teachers than to college presidents, but this group of college administrators did find such work, some as professors, some as consultants, some in part-time leadership positions in church or civic welfare organizations.
