ABSTRACT

In 1969 the Society was incorporated as the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Society and in the following year the Metro Toronto Council undertook to build the Zoo. The work was supervised by a team of consultants, working with the city council and the Zoological Society. The simplest way to give an impression of the whole Zoo is to describe the 'Round the World Tour', one of the several routes which have been planned for visitors. Vital to the Zoo's success, of course, was the acquisition of its future inhabitants. Some of the Metro Toronto Zoo's animals were obtained from the wild under licence, but most of them came from other zoos where they had been bred. The public exhibits are only the tip of the iceberg, and Metro Toronto has a considerable back-up service and administrative organization, the latter being shared between the municipality, who own the Zoo, and the Board of Management, who operate it.
