ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights a real-world case study to demonstrate typical trade-offs and decisions that need to be made during the implementation of an object-based thematic accuracy assessment. The case study is an accuracy assessment of a fine-scale vegetation map created for the National Park Service (NPS) Grand Canyon National Park/Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. The chapter provides an overview of the project and summarizes the mapping methods used. It explores the accuracy assessment design, data collection, and analysis tasks. The chapter deals with a review of lessons learned during the design and implementation of the accuracy assessment. The NPS produces standardized, high-quality vegetation maps of its National Parks and NPS Units through the NPS Vegetation Inventory Program. All NPS vegetation classification plots were reviewed on the imagery, and classification plot labels determined to be valid labels for the segment within which they fell were included in the set of field sample segments.
