ABSTRACT

The exiles were accompanied to the frontier by a guard of Austrian troops, and before the end of their journey had reason to be glad of their escort. The exiles were fortunate in their final resting-place; for thought of a rather sombre grandeur, no more lovely view could have been found, than that from the chateau looking over the Rhine as it leaves Lake Constance. Hitherto Louis Philippe the prince had been less fortunate in the matter of his education. The troubled years of the First Empire’s close had come too early to affect his life. But the period of homeless wandering which followed rendered difficult any systematised study ; and the uncertainty as to which parent was to be entrusted with the charge of his upbringing had a further unfortunate effect. In the summer of 1821, Louis Napoleon’s education entered upon a new stage.
