ABSTRACT

The reasons why people come into social work are numerous. Some have clear, well-rehearsed positions and others have difficulty identifying their motives and beliefs. There are as many worldviews as there are people to hold them. What we know as '-isms' (socialism, feminism) are such cogent worldviews that we often refer to them as theories. A theory is a coherent explanation of why the world is as it is. It often provides both an analysis of some aspect of the world and prescriptions about how the world might be changed to rectify wrongs that are evident in the analysis. A group for people with socially disabling stutters was finding the going tough, with long periods of silence and no eye contact. Gradually, the group members found that they could communicate with each other by addressing comments through the dog.
