ABSTRACT

This section introduces the topic of resilience as it applies to space systems. It further offers delineation between analysis and the design activity and provides some historical context in the development of design approaches that result in resilient systems. This includes more recent events that have increased the need for resilient space systems. Analogies are provided that compare this emerging systems engineering discipline to more established and documented disciplines such as reliability engineering. The need for resilience is discussed as well as the manner in which this need is changing how system designers modify their design trade studies to include it as a new trade parameter and the implications of this on system designs themselves.
