ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to describe how translation and accessibility can be integrated into the different stages of the filmmaking process, and more specifically in pre-production, production and post-production and before distribution. For preproduction, the chapter looks at the role of translation in the scriptwriting process, the translation of scripts for funding in co-productions and the provision of material for translators. In the production stage, the focus is placed on on-site translation/interpreting, the role of translation and accessibility in the mise en scène (setting, costumes and makeup, lighting and staging) and cinematography (framing) and the transcription of documentaries. The postproduction stage deals with the impact of translation/media accessibility on editing (the rule of six, transition shots and L-cuts and J-cuts). The chapter ends by looking at how translation and media accessibility can be considered before distribution, with a focus on dubbing, voice-over, subtitling, SDH, creative subtitling and audio description.
