ABSTRACT
On May 2, 1990, Árpád Göncz became Hungary’s first democratically elected president in four decades. In his acceptance speech he depicted himself not as a politician but as a writer, thinker, and patriot. While Göncz may not be a politician he has certainly been the tragic victim of politics.
