ABSTRACT

In 1974, sociologist Joffre Dumazedier made the following statement concerning leisure. Leisure has been introduced by means of a profound mutation of the being which means that a new relationship is established between the individual and his or her exterior nature, and the individual and his or her inner being. Some scholars have written that the rise of leisure in the post-industrial society is ‘indisputable’, or has been proven beyond disagreement. Anti-leisure behaviour has been increased by our inability to satiate our material desires. Public recreation organizations can help foster a sense of community and an evolving culture taking risks and a belief in the importance of leisure. In the United States, recreation and parks are an accepted responsibility of government. The public recreation and park movement came about in response to urbanization. A final implication of anti-leisure for public recreation concerns the preparation of those who work in public recreation and park agencies.
