ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a survey of today’s migration patterns and trends visible in Tejam, followed by a broader analysis of migration reasons. The main reasons identified are low-quality human development at source (education, health and incomes as main factors), but also the unprofitability of agriculture. Although focused on one particular village, the analysis of migration reasons has broader applications to the general discussion on migration and human development. Using artwork drawn by children, their perceptions of the reasons for migration are contrasted with those of adults. An understanding of migration causes provides the necessary context for the following chapter, which elaborates on how different types of migration impact on the village scene and on those who stay behind. Migration occurs on the backdrop of the paradoxical nature of change and continuity in the village. The analysis of this chapter is built on data derived from the household survey, verbatim quotes from a wide range of interviewed villagers, and artwork drawn by village children.
