ABSTRACT

Training is the means by which an organization teaches employees effective use of a new system and consequent role changes. Training comes in many formats—classroom, instructor-led, proctored free time, and Web-based, written. There are also different levels of training needed to support a CHΔNGE™ initiative. With ICD-10, for example, many people will only need general awareness training and this can easily be done with e-learning modules and/or in staff meetings. Connecting the dots runs counter to transactional training approaches in which the focus is on completing feature/function training and checking it off the list. The Connect-the-Dots Approach is a means to strengthen the relationship between training and operations by creating a partnership. When everyone agrees that training is the logical place to connect the new system with day-to-day clinical and business practice, currculums are developed that are meaningful to users in their respective roles, scope of practice, priorities, and specialty or department.
