ABSTRACT

An important component of leadership is developing trust through integrity. A common misstep that leaders make is incorporating a positional perspective to developing a team’s core values. In other words, the team’s values are reflective of the leader’s values. While this can be effective if one have a healthy, flourishing leader, it can also serve to create a very judgmental culture by declaring what values are celebrated and what values are dismissed. If team members feel they need to hide values that are important to them because they are not aligned with the leader, that eventually impacts team effectiveness. Communication helps provide clarity of purpose, mission, and goals. But the most effective leaders with the highest level of respect typically are very consistent in aligning their words and behavior with their values.
