ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, we will focus on the business aspects of the screenwriting profession, beginning with an examination of how a writer can gain beneficial feedback to improve their work, the copyright to protect it, and the outlets to market it. A detailed study of script competitions, coverage and marketing services, and agency representation will focus on both their advantages and disadvantages. We will also consider the necessity of a writer relocating to a major production center, specifically Los Angeles, if they wish to build and maintain the professional relationships that form the basis for a mainstream career. In this regard, we will explore the challenges of pitching and how a successful writer never depends on a single idea or project. The perils and pitfalls of self-produced and independent productions will be analyzed, particularly as they pertain to gaining qualified experience and reliable business relationships. Finally we will offer some strong advice on the best manner in which to negotiate a deal, whether it’s for a feature film project or a staff assignment in television.
