ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a framework that helps researchers to critically encounter and analyse storytelling experiences, by teasing apart their layers. It explores English’s work briefly and uses it as inspiration for the own framework that is more appropriate for the requirements of immersive storytelling experiences, and which focuses on the concepts of participant, process, creation, and story. The chapter provides examples from one specific story world to demonstrate the similarities and differences of various storytelling experiences: genres that have grown out of and extended the stories of Harry Potter. The different genres in which a story is told thus facilitate different kinds of experience. The orientation of participant is concerned with the people that encounter the immersive experience or story world. There are storytelling genres where the space is part and parcel of the experience, when either the experience is located in a specific location or the space has been designed for the experience specifically.
