ABSTRACT

The introduction first outlines the puzzle that is the starting point for this book: despite U.S. domestic and international pressure for change in U.S. democracy promotion and despite the many troubles and the ‘backlash’ the policy has faced in recent years, scholars tell us that it is relatively and surprisingly stable. Developing the two research questions from this observation, it explains why the ‘cultural angle’ is worth pursuing as a potential pillar of this stability, outlines the way in which the book proceeds to answer the questions, and presents its key arguments and contributions.
