ABSTRACT

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) administrative staff positions contain a special dimension – and that is the dimension of high stress. This stress comes from sheer numbers. In the integration of power, politics, and critical theory within the SCPS’ adult learning programs, administrative staff come in second only to affiliated faculty. In general, the staff of the SCPS experienced all the issues of the larger institution writ small. They served as the face of the college to adult learners and reflected the state of power, politics, and critical theory back to the adult learners. Administrative staff is second only to affiliated faculty as conduits of power, politics, and critical theory directly to the adult learner. Similar to the faculty assessment rubric, potential administrative staff should be evaluated against their own rubric that is designed to measure critical theory values in specific cases as well as how well the employee-candidate deals with high stress levels.
