ABSTRACT

The rural environment has undergone several transformations, mostly connected to the concepts of new ruralities, and has become a space of services as well as a site for leisure and new economic sources through pluriactivity. Family farming also undergoes a series of social and structural transformations. The information and communication technologies (ICT), especially the Internet, have been adopted by family farmers in rural areas with direct impacts on the daily life of those who live there. Not only a cultural change is observed but also a change in daily activities through the search for new practices, new markets, and new experiences made available by the advent of communication. This chapter aims to analyze the influence of the increasing use of the Internet on mobility in rural areas. To this end, data on the growth of the Internet in rural areas will be analyzed, and data on an empirical research carried out with a family farmer from the municipality of Santa Rosa de Lima – Santa Catarina, will be presented.
