ABSTRACT

While this might be obvious, research on transport does not always capture the multiplicities embedded in mobilities as a broader phenomenon. Then, when it comes to tourism, physical displacements (i.e., the basic condition for the existence of tourism itself) or movement of other elements might not be taken into account in all their complexity. From this perspective, and considering Brazil as the context, we ask, “How mobile is tourism research on transport in Brazil?”, echoing the issues raised by a mobility turn in social sciences over the last decades. To do so, we proposed as analytical parameters: (a) researchable entities, (b) types of mobilities, and (c) mobile methods. For now, we can observe that research on tourism and transport in Brazil focuses more on tourists (despite the roles of other social groups – such as workers), making use of tools mainly from social sciences (participant observation and travel diaries) and history (oral history). In terms of theoretical development, we realized that few works take the new mobility paradigm into account, making room for more experimentation in researches on tourism and transport, considering the wide range of complexities present in all sorts of mobilities.
