ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 examines methodological and ethical choices in the documentary Girl Model as an example of the additional shaping influence and legacies of ethnographic practices taught in academic departments. Academic departments have recently turned toward the sensory, sonic, and audiovisual tools as part of a burgeoning video methodology exploring aspects of sensuousness. This newly emerging emphasis on the sensuous has led academics to interact in many nuanced ways with documentary films: they appear in documentaries; they use documentaries in classes to illustrate concepts; they analyze and interpret documentaries in the context of their research. However, it seems that very few academics are able to find the infrastructural institutional support necessary to produce this kind of emergent sensuous knowledge in video ethnography or documentary film form.
