ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with coating materials used for onshore and offshore pipelines operating at elevated temperature and presents information on various coating systems available for thermal insulation. It describes with the conventional foam insulation systems, field joints and repairs to the coating may be achieved. The chapter presents coating application, repair, use with thermal insulation coatings, under concrete weight coatings, and in conjunction with cathodic protection. It also describes material selection, external coatings, and cathodic protection as applied to pipelines, subsea equipment, and structures. External corrosion protection must be a primary consideration during design. Materials selection and coatings are the first line of defense against external corrosion. A key limiting factor for pipelines transporting hot products is the external corrosion coating. The resistance of stainless steels against pitting corrosion can be roughly estimated by the pitting resistance equivalent number.
