ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the market perspective for the multi-access edge computing (MEC) vendors. It identifies the players and discusses what are the opportunities and challenges associated with each element of the MEC architecture. The vendors most likely to benefit from these revenue streams are the traditional network vendors as they can bundle these network efficiency services with the traditional radio access network, transport, or core components. There are various threats and hazards that could target MEC networks or devices, and both the network operators as well as vendors should be aware and be able to mitigate them. By engaging with enterprises that are planning to build private LTE networks, vendors can leverage both their knowledge of traditional networks as well as their understanding of mission-critical applications and its network requirements. The loss of policy enforcement functions such as VPN termination, intellectual property whitelisting, or MPLS/VLAN labeling could also have an extremely significant impact on system and/or network integrity.
