ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the possibility and desirability of transitions research becoming a transitions science. The usual arguments against such an enterprise are examined and found wanting. The scientific calibre of the dominant approach to transitions research is critically appraised. Following an analysis of the interplay between theory, models and empiricism in mainstream science, the concluding section presents various, relatively concrete suggestions to move towards a science of transitions.
