ABSTRACT

This address was delivered as one of two keynote performances opening the fourteenth Annual International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois on May 17, 2018. The keynote address was written with its oral performance in mind. It was accompanied by visual images reinforcing its message. The Congress, held in the Illini Union on the campus of the University of Illinois, sat on the land once occupied by a confederation of native tribes known collectively as the Illini. Obviously, a Congress of this size and scope was the result of scores of influential people who have shaped the field of qualitative inquiry for decades as well as the dozens of up-and-coming scholars who have often served in administrative and organizing roles. The theme announced for the 14th Congress was "Qualitative Inquiry in Troubled Time". Mr. N. Denzin requested a keynote title and an abstract of its content by March 15, 2017, which was two months into the Trump Administration.
